I choose to work within the walls of utilitarian ceramics. Pots have the ability to give an appreciation of the handmade by heightening rituals of every day experience. The touch of the maker can elevate the experience of the user, and turn sensory interactions into personal connections. The ability to make a personal impression, through an object, continues to fascinate me. I constantly search for why others are attracted to that which I have created.

Various inspirations come from nature, the human body, architecture, and historical ceramics. I turn to nature as a source for color, surface, and pattern. The human body evokes thoughts of line, volume, and surface. Architecture leads me towards scale, form, and ornament. Historical ceramics are a stimulus for understanding utility, design, and structure.

Process allows for that which is non-comprehensible to emerge. Compelling discoveries are traditionally unearthed during studio practice. Process leads not only to a product, but also to curiosity. Revealing that which is curious enables future decisions.

I am on a continuous road towards an understanding of style, voice, and language through utilitarian ceramics. I am not on a mission towards an end, or a voyage to come to a conclusion. The ability to be on the journey is the answer to the question. The act of asking the question is the goal. There is neither end nor conclusion. Language is routinely unable to express reasoning.

“Each man’s life represents a road towards himself, an attempt at such a road, the intimation of a path. No man has ever been entirely and completely himself, yet each one strives to become – one in an awkward, the other in a more intelligent way, each the best he can.” -Herman Hesse
